After a brief stint closing down and becoming the Main Street Bar and Grill. (Many thanks to Teresa Ramirez and Dave Grant for info).
Here's a Bob's statue that used to sit in the Montclair mall. Unfortunately, this restaurant closed down a few years ago and Bob went with it.
This Bob's statue still greets visitors to the Toluca Lake Big Boy restaurant near Burbank. One of the best remaining Bob's Big Boy's remaining. This location still features car hop service and the classic Big Boy Combo while catering to large crowds on a daily basis. This roadside delight designed by the late Wayne McAllister was restored in the 90's after being close to meeting the fate of other great roadside eateries... the wrecking ball. Thanks in part to the L.A. Conservancy's Modern Committee, this classic eatery can still be enjoyed today. Check out more photos and info for this Bob's Big Boy at Roadside Peek's Spotlight on Bob's Big Boy Toluca Lake. 04-08
Unfortunately, this Reno landmark did not meet such a glorious fate as its relative above. As you can see, the Bob's logo has been mostly wiped out. Not sure of the fate of the building itself.
UPDATE : Sad to say it was bulldozed this summer (2001). it never reopened. Coming soon a 50's style McDonald's opening soon. Many thanks to Ron K. for update on the Reno Bob's sad fate.
This Bob's Big Boy location in Fresno is a good example of the Bob's Big Boy's that were in built in the ranch style look towards the mid to latter part of the last century.
UPDATE 09/10 : Bob's Big Boy in Fresno, CA, closed in September of 2005. I was really sorry to see it go. Many years ago, as a kid I actually saw Ronald Reagan, Johnny Weissmuller, and Zsa Zsa Gabor in there, although not at the same time. I was with my grandmother and step-grandfather and they told me they were there and who they were. When I was older and remembered seeing them there, I couldn't figure out why they went to Bob's Big Boy. I didn't realize it was a franchise, with restaurants in Southern California; I thought it was a local thing. Now it kind of makes sense. Today, the Bob's Big Boy in Fresno is the site of a Taco Bell. Many thanks to Patti Elde for update. 09-10
Once upon a time, these ranch style Bob's Big Boy restaurant were located all over the Southland, including Garden Grove, Montebello, and Long Beach. Well, this location on Wilshire Blvd is one of the last of the ranch style survivors.
UPDATE 07/08 : Bob's on Wilshire, is scheduled to close for business. Its last day will be Sunday, June 22, 2008. Many thanks to Chris Krause for update, which was received on June 18. 07-08
