The 40 Motel of Columbus, OH looks like a poor man's version of the old Holiday Inn marquee of the 60's. Featuring similar, though subdued, colors, the 40 Motel makes a not so subtle reference to the highway.

Here's a close-up look at the 40 Motel sign. It's good to see that there are still existing roadside signs along the old Highway 40 as it cut through Columbus. 05-06

Gorilla Villa

Ever heard of the Gorilla Villa? How about the "headless" Gorilla Villa? Well, the Gorilla Villa sign in gorilla... 'er... Gravois Mills, MO used to have a head until a storm ripped the head off a few years back. Now, this headless sign can't help but turn the head of the roadside traveler passing through. Unless, of course, the traveler is used to seeing headless apparitions.

UPDATE 07/11 : The Gorilla Villa has left the premises. The old motel on Route 5 has been torn down by the Gravois Mills board of trustees not long after the property was purchased by the board in June. According to the LakeNewsOnline article, the 1940's era motel is being replaced by a city park. 07-11

The Star Motel in Wisconsin looks like the 60's Holiday Inn sign. Not sure if this is one of the originals or just a copycat version.

Overpass Motel

The Overpass Motel is getting lit-up for another evening of work.

This motel is located at the intersection of US Hwy 27 and SR 32 in Winchester, Indiana. The motel is still in business and this wonderful old sign shines brightly each night. Many thanks to Ken Bailey for info.
