Looking for a good place to eat while in Fresno? Then check out this googie coffee shop... George's, just off the main drag.
Unfortunately, yet another treasure from the space age era has disappeared. George's was torn down in the late 90's and replaced by a rather ordinary looking structure.
Grab some grub at the Village Restaurant and take a look at an old classic coffee shop/restaurant.
Welcome to J's Coffee Shop and stop in for some hot coffee. Wait, where is J's you may ask? Hmmm... there's the marquee but no one's home. The marquee of J's still sits along the old highway, still advertising the ghost of a roadside eatery in Delano, California.
(Far left) Close-up of the sign (Near left) The drive-in UPDATE 08/06 : The Mearles Drive-in Restaurant closed down on August 15, 2006 after 66 years of business. The owners of the restaurant were evicted due to non-payment of back rent. Another grand stallion of the road has left the stable. Many thanks to Chet Wilson for update. 08-06 Here are more photos of the Mearle's Drive-in from when times were better.
UPDATE 12/08 : Since August 2006, the historic Mearles Drive-in eatery off the main throroughfare in Visalia, CA has sat vacant. Mearle's was placed on the local register of historic structures in late 2006 after being threatened for demolition by the landlord. According to the Visaiia Times-Delta, the site is now being advertised for lease.
This Bob's Big Boy location in Fresno is a good example of the Bob's Big Boy's that were in built in the ranch style look towards the mid to latter part of the last century.
Here's Lauck's Restaurant, located just off the main drag in Visalia. One of the last with the coffee architecture of yesteryear in the area, Lauck's closed down a few years ago and has been remodeled into a nondescript building. 12-06
This was originally a Bob's Big Boy in Madera California that was of the ranch design of the 70s . It later on changed to Eppies in the 80s and is now a Country Waffles today. 07-07
