It's amazing to see how much places and signage can change in the span of a few years. Years back, travelers along the old 99 in Bakersfield would be met with a huge marquee pointing the way in to the Desert Star Motel while advertising "Sleep off the Hi-way". Well, the moniker may still be around, but only on a very small plastic sign. Hmm... which version of this sign would be best at catching the eye of potential visitors?

The Ayres Motel located in Fresno still features an old roadside sign flashing back to the days when these old motor courts were the place to spend the night. From the looks of things, this old motel is still in business today.

Here's the Big Star Motel in Fresno. Featuring the shapes of yesteryear, the marquee is quite a roadside treasure. This old sign must have been quite a sight to see, back when the neon was intact and showing of the motel row in Fresno.

This old faded sign sits on the lot of the California Motel in Fresno. Imagine what this marquee looked like in its heyday, as it stood along with the other motel signs advertising their state of the art signs to draw in sleepy customers to its lodgings.

(Far right) A close up look at the marquee, barely showing off the "motel" lettering on the sign.

The Capri Motel still stands along the old route in Bakersfield.

UPDATE 12/08 : Here are a few more images of the Capri Motel. From the looks of these photos, the tall vertical marquee standing by the roadside was removed in recent years.

The once prominent sign added a touch of 50's or 60's feel to the complex. The large letters on the driveway port as well as the rectangular plastic sign still survive to this day.

The Capri Theatre is located on Union Avenue, which is the old Route 99, in a busy area of Bakersfield. Since the photo to the left was taken, several businesses and signs along the old route have been removed, including the Farmer John's Pancake House which was demolished. Soon, not much will be left to remind folks of the old mom and pop businesses that used to be Route 99 in Bakersfield, CA. 12-08
