Travel up (or down) the Highway 99 just past Tulare and you'll see an old roadside treasure standing off the old highway, looking like its best years are well past.

The Tagus Country Theatre is located just north of Tulare and once was home to a coffee shop, lounge, and motel. Eventually, the "ranch" became a showplace, complete with live theater.

From the looks from the postcard image, the marquee used to show off the Motel portion of the business in bold letters. The sign also advertised the coffee shop of the business, which today is in a state of decay.

 

Back during the WWII era, the Tagus Ranch area was the site of a prisoner of war camp.

As can be seen in the close-up shot of the marquee taken in late 2008, the marquee is a bit more beat-up these days in comparison to the photo at the left taken about 10 years ago. Check out the way the left side of the sign is peeling off, exposing the underside to the elements.
