Here's an old sign that points to the remains of the Old Macdonald's Farm near Sacramento.
Here's a nice retro marquee for the Chuck's Restaurant. The different cut out shapes and mix of upper and lower case font make this sign special.
Check out this lines on Joe's Restaurant in the Bay Area. The sign and the building of this steak house/supper club really spoke 'Rat Pack' era. UPDATE 06/06 : This Joe's is located in the Westlake district and is called Westlake Joe's. In the 70's, it was located across from the Westlake shopping center. Many thanks to Karin Weman for update. 06-06
Here's a unique sign for a roadside eatery. The marquee for Fine Food features a thermometer. Hopefully the 62 degrees doesn't reflect the food temperature.
The Ranch in Hayward along Mission Boulevard features a cow that looks like a king. An interesting effect to say the least. Not quite sure what the cow is made out of, though he looks rather real in the photo. UPDATE 04/05 : I'm not sure if The Ranch in Hayward is still there (author: it is still open). I do know they used to make a wonderful Lobster Thermador. Many thanks to John from Carson City for update. 04-05 UPDATE 05/06 : My husband and I own the Ranch with the King Cow head, as a friend's child calls it. Did you notice that the crown on the bull says "cocktails?" The Ranch has been there since 1947. The sign is vintage, to say the least! It even used to rotate, I'm told. We have a website with more info if you would like to take a "peek." Thanks for including us! www.haywardranch.com. Many thanks to Ranch owners Christine and Chris Sarantakis for update. 05-06
Here's the 'world famous' Emil Villa's. This sign is more impressive at night, especially since it's about 50 feet high. The real treasure here, though, is a neon pig 'sequence' sign. The pig runs along a wall and dives into a pie. UPDATE 04/05 : Emil Villa's in Hayward is still going strong. The ribs are the best in the country! They smoke 'em in a wood fired oven. You might jump when they whack the ribs apart with a cleaver. Whack! Many thanks to John from Carson City for update. 04-05
The Pine Cone Restaurant marquee is somewhat unremarkable, other than its flashback advertisement for fountain services and good food.
This is a photo of a "ham guy." Not sure of the name of this place, but the sign looks great, especially around dinner time. This sign may also look quite interesting at night.
