Here's the deco facade of the Rex Theatre. Though not all of the letters are lit up, it's great to see another classic neon theatre marquee and theatre itself alive and well. The Rex originally opened in 1920 as a home for vaudeville and silent movies. Several decades ago, the theatre was faced with fires on two separate occasions and damage from an earthquake. Today, the Rex Theatre features two screens and still features first run movies. For more information, see the Cinema Treasures website.
The Boulder Theatre is in fine shape as its neon advertises the holiday classic Nutcracker. The Boulder Theatre was built in 1933 by Fox Theatres and was home to movies and entertainment until closing in the mid-1990's due to stiff competition from nearby cineplexes. Desi Arnaz Jr. purchased the theatre and he and his wife Amy is converting it into a live performing arts venue. Today, the theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the permanent home for the Boulder City Ballet Company.
