The Coleman Theatre, built in 1929, is a Route 66 treasure found in Miami, OK. Currently in the process of being restored through the devoted efforts of the Friends of the Coleman, the theater was place on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980's.
Here's an old motel sign for the Rest Haven in Afton. Located off the Mother Road, the Rest Haven Motel looks like its seen better days.
An oft photographed sign, the marquee for the Round-up Motel in Claremore features a neon cowpoke. Not sure if this sign still lights up anymore.
While traveling Route 66 in Oklahoma, don't forget to venture a bit off and visit Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park in Foyil. This park was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
There are roadside attractions and there are Roadside Attractions. The Blue Whale in Catoosa is one of the latter. Built in the 1970's, the Blue Whale was recently refurbished so hopefully its smile will last for a lifetime.
The Metro Diner in Tulsa is a favorite Route 66 eatery for those who look for a good meal and good service off the Mother Road. UPDATE 04/08 :
When traveling through Sapulpa, don't forget to see Norma's Diamond Cafe. Sadly, Norma passed away on November 23, 2000 leaving the rest of us Route 66 travelers to find another place for a cup of coffee and genuine hospitality famous for the Mother Road.
Here's a look at the Braum's Milk Bottle in Oklahoma City. Right off Route 66, this huge milk bottle can be seen for blocks. This bottle once advertised Townley's Gilt-Edge back in the day prior to Braums. Many thanks to Billy Benham for name correction and history.
Check out the huge marquee in front of the Yukon Motel in Yukon. This colorful and eye-catching sign served a purpose... a purpose of catching the eye of travelers. Unfortunately, rumors state that this sign was recently removed.
A Route 66 motel treasure, The Glancy Motor Hotel in Clinton, OK still features its huge marquee. Unfortunately, the feeling from the owner is that business has been tight. With the loss of the Pop Hicks Restaurant next door a few years ago, Route 66 can't afford to lose another beacon of the Mother Road.
Next stop: Onwards to Texas.
