Here's an old motor hotel complex, complete with dining room area. The Royale Palms Motor Hotel still serves up to visitors in Bakersfield.
The Hal Mar Inn still appears to be serving guests, though the motel rooms themselves also have that abandoned look about them. In either, the fancy marquee out front still sits by the roadside. It's amazing to see how much places and signage can change in the span of a few years. Years back, travelers along the old 99 in Bakersfield would be met with a huge marquee pointing the way in to the Desert Star Motel while advertising "Sleep off the Hi-way". Well, the moniker may still be around, but only on a very small plastic sign. Hmm... which would be best at catching the eye of potential visitors?
The Ayres Motel located in Fresno still features an old roadside sign flashing back to the days when these old motor courts were the place to spend the night.
Here's the Big Star Motel in Fresno. Featuring the shapes of yesteryear, the marquee is quite a roadside treasure.
This old faded sign sits on the lot of the California Motel in Fresno. Imagine what this marquee looked like in its heyday.
The City Motel in Fresno points the way into the lodging area. This is another old marquee whose paint has faded with time. Yes, the sign also points the way to the free TV.
The Capri Motel still stands along the old route in Bakersfield.
Here's another old sign for the Fowler Motel that's faded like many of the others.
