I
am writing to help save Johnie’s Broiler, located at 7447 Firestone Boulevard
in the City of Downey. This unique
coffee shop is a superb and rare example of 50’s ‘Googie’ architecture and is
one of the last classic car hops in Southern California.
Johnie’s
has been an important community landmark in continuous operation since
1958. The community has many fond
memories of Johnie’s, some even worked there as car hops in the 50’s when it
was known as Harvey’s Broiler. Johnie’s
Broiler is a part of Southern California car culture history as well, having
been a cruising destination for vintage car clubs in the 50’s and 60’s.
More
recently, Johnie’s has been a commercial and movie location for films such as
“Heat”, “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, “Unstrung Heroes” “Reality Bites”, as
well as an television episode of “X-Files”.
Lily Tomlin played a waitress who worked at Johnie’s in “Short
Cuts”. These productions generate
revenue for the City of Downey and benefit the community.
We
urge your consideration and recommendation to revitalize and preserve Johnie’s for
future generations.
