Henry Moffett's (Gone)
Bellflower, CA

Lookin' for some good old fashioned chicken pies for lunch or dinner? Then check out Moffett's and the chicken on the roof. Henry Moffett's opened in 1958.

UPDATE 06/13 : Moffetts closed its doors in August 2007. The site is now home to a medical office building. 06-13

The Bear Pit

The Bear Pit Bar-B-Q looks to be a good place to stop for some Missouri style eats. This Bar-B-Q pit was once a small shack out in Newhall.

This rib joint which dates back to the 1940's is fortunately still around and as busy as ever.

(Many thanks to the numerous contributors advising that The Bear Pit is alive and well!)

Zucky's Deli (Closed)
Santa Monica, CA

Like the Bear Pit above, not sure if this place is still around. Zucky's Deli looked to be a good roadside stop back in its heyday, but the crude advances of time proved to be too much for this icon. Zucky's originally opened its doors in 1954 and closed down in 1993.

UPDATE 10/06 : Zucky's has been remodeled and is now open. Many thanks to Chris of Lottaliving.com for update. 10-06

UPDATE 12/07 : Zucky's has sat empty for the past 14 years.  The building and sign were renovated several months ago.  There is a sign in the window that the building will be a bank location (I forget what bank, it's not a big one).  That sign has been there for months, but there has been no activity inside (i.e., installing the things one would need to run a bank). Many thanks to Don Solosan for update. 12-07

UPDATE 02/08 : The bank has moved in and is now open for business.  Many thanks to Don Solosan for update. 02-08

La Palma Chicken Pie Shop (Closed)
Anaheim, CA

The La Palma Chicken Pie Shop has sat in Anaheim for many a year. This Anaheim institution has been pumping out chicken pies to hungry patrons since 1955. Try out their classic chicken pies when you're in the area, or on the way to Disneyland.

UPDATE 04/16 : The pie shop is now closed. The longtime owner Otto Hasselbarth who owned the place since 1972 passed away in July 2014. The top part of the 20 foot neon sign that has the chicken roosting on the La Palma lettering was saved and being restored by the Museum of Neon Art. For more, see the Orange County Register. 04-16
