While ten pin alleys are dropping like flies (at least the unique marquees) in the States, the sign for Bowlero Lanes still stands proudly in Ontario, Canada. Pay this place a visit and bowl a few games while in town.
Echo Lanes Lanes (Gone) Check out Echo Lanes in Cuba, NY. This place looks like its close cousin, the typical skating rink. Eye-catching colors on the walls of this ten pin alley will catch the eye of the roadside traveler looking to bowl a few frames. 11-00 UPDATE 12/05 : Echo Lanes has closed its doors as its owner passed away recently. Many thanks to David Wagner for update. 12-05
Photos from the day after the fire are below. Echo Lanes gutted by fire According to firehouse.com, over 100 firefighters from two counties battled the blaze for six hours. No injuries were reported and investigators are still searching for a cause. The Olean Times Herald report stated that the business had plans to expand into a restaurant.
Dixie
Bowling The Dixie Bowling alley in Elmira, NY looks like a throwback to the pre-war days. Imagine a scene taking place here where a soldier kisses his loved one goodbye... Ok, I guess that's one movie too many. 11-00
Crystal Lanes in Corning, NY displays an imaginative way of spelling out is name. 11-00
Over in New Hyde Park, NY is a very special bowling alley called the Sterling Bowl. What is most interesting about this structure is that the small building on top only serves as a lobby and entrance. Once you enter, take an elevator ride (or stairs) to the lower bowling level where you find the entire bowling alley, front desk, restaurant, and bar underneath the parking lot! No wonder the sign in the picture at the below left blares "NO TRUCKS PERMITTED!"
Sterling Bowl Entranceway
UPDATE 09/04 : Sterling Bowl closed in 2001 and has since been replaced by an underground entertainment center called "Strike!" which has cosmic bowling and go-karts and things like that. Still has that small building on top and everything else under the parking lot, but sad to say, that old-time bowling alley is gone. Many thanks to John from Glen Oaks for this update. 09-04
Check out this old sign out front on Asbury Lanes, in Asbury Park, NJ. Asbury Lanes was recently converted into an entertainment center with a bar, entertainment stage, and food service added to to its old staple bowling. For more information, check out the Asbury Lanes website. Hy Way Bowl Here's a great shot of the marquee at the Hy Way Bowl in Union, NJ. Check out the classic lettering on the bowling pin, which was at some time decked out in neon.
