Bob's Big Boy Broiler Opens at Historic Spot
Two years after the illegal demolition of Johnie's Broiler, fans of the former Harvey's and Johnie's Broiler in Downey gathered at the Firestone Boulevard location Monday for the opening of the new Bob's Big Boy Broiler. New Big Boy Broiler Featuring a familiar huge car rooftop marquee, the Broiler has remained as true to its original roots as possible with authentic terrazzo flooring in the interior of the restaurant and carhop service during weekdays. Blasters at the Broiler Saturday 9/26 at 4:30pm September 26, 2009 Word just in: The Blasters will play from 4:30pm to sunset on Saturday 9/26 and will be featuring special guests. More Broiler Updates September 24, 2009 The 26th is a pre-opening bash...preview party. As you can see from the pix, the Broiler is still a ways off from opening and unfortunately the kitchen will not be up and running. Drinks and snacks will be available, but packing an ice chest would probably be a good idea, especially if you're planning to make a day of it. Blasters to Play Sept 26th at Pre-Opening Broiler Event 9/26/2009 6:00 PM at BOB’S BROILER, CRUISE-IN Free - All Ages - Bring the kids and your Cruiser! A preview party for the old Johnie’s Broiler in Downey, CA that is currently being restored back to its original glory and rebranded as a Bob’s Big Boy. Festivities start at noon and the Blasters will play a short set at about 6:00pm. Parking will be available in the adjacent lot (behind the car wash). New Broiler Cruise-in Scheduled for September 26 September 14, 2009 Celebrate the new Bob's Big Boy Broiler, formerly Harvey's / Johnie's Broiler, on Saturday September 26, 2009 from 11am to sunset. The free event will be presented by the Friends of Johnie's & The Coalition to Rebuild the Broiler and will feature cars and music, including special musical guests The Blasters. Former Johnie's Broiler Marquee as of May 11, 2009 On Friday a crane hoisted a massive 60 foot beam into place, and over the weekend the steel framework was assembled and wood framing started going up. It's surreal to be there in person and realize how amazing it is that this project is actually happening. Is there anyone out there who's rebuilding a 1950s Googie drive-in restaurant from the original blueprints?! Stay tuned, more to come. More photos from May 11, 2009 below.

06.26.09 Downey, CA - Work progresses on the new Bob's Big Boy Broiler in Downey.
Thursday, June 25 saw a major symbolic milestone met for the new Big Boy Broiler. Yes, Bob has arrived! The 12 foot vintage Bob was hoisted up on the roof of the Broiler as the 3rd generation Broiler takes shape after the original Harvey's Broiler and subsequent Johnie's Broiler.
05.25.09 Downey, CA - Construction continues at the soon to be Bob's Big Boy Broiler site. The latest news is that owner Jim has found a 12 foot rotating vintage Bob.
05.19.09 Downey, CA - Here are more construction photos from the site of the new Bob's Big Boy Broiler. As you can see, things are just humming along as work continues to make the new Broiler a reality.
05.13.09 Downey, CA - The letters went up on the former Johnie's Broiler sign today as construction continues at the site. The brushed script lettering is a familiar and welcome sight to the roadside fans who used to frequent Harvey's Broiler and subsequently Johnie's Broiler.
