Here's another of the historic hotels that dot Oakland. The Sutter Hotel still features is vertical marquee intact. These are the types of building and historic hotels that are being renovated into lofts over the past few years. It still remains to be seen what the impact of this recent trend to permanent living space will have on both the fabric of downtown's and the roadside.
The Plaza Hotel in Watsonville features the block hotel lettering on the front facade.
The Ryde Hotel still features an old vertical sign outside of its doors. This marquee still contains lettering pointing out dinners.
UPDATE 12/09 : Here's an updated photo of the Ryde Hotel signage in Walnut Grove, CA. The hotel isn't a product of the '50s, as it has been around since the 20's, but has a cool sign that always catches the eye. The hotel is located in the Delta on old Highway 160 running along the Sacramento River. It still is a hotel to this day and has a cool event room in the basement that was a speakeasy back in the day. Many thanks to Jon Shackelford for updated photo and info. 12-09
The Flamingo Hotel opened in June 1957. After a near 20 year absence, the hotel’s spinning neon bird was returned to its perch on top of an 85-foot pedestal sign in May 1997. See their website for more information. 09-08
Here's the entrance and sign for the Hotel Petaluma, located north of San Francisco. The hotel itself as founded in 1923 and survives to this day. 12-10
