Here’s the sign for Sofspra Car Wash in Encinitas, trying to catch the attention of motorists whose cars could use a little help. No giant neon automobile or spinning brush up top, just a straightforward roadside announcement that it’s time to wash the ride.

The sign fits one of those practical stops along Coast Highway where the car gets the attention for a change. After a stretch of coastal driving, a windshield full of road grime can make even a modest car-wash sign look inviting.

Sofspra offers self-service washing bays, keeping the familiar routine of pulling in, picking up the wand, and trying to finish before the timer does. Apparently, sightseeing can include a little work between stops.

UPDATE: Sofspra remains open along Coast Highway 101, with self-service washing still part of the operation. The car wash continues doing its roadside job, giving passing vehicles a chance to leave looking better than they arrived. 10-26
