The Jolly Wash sign in Memphis proved that even a neighborhood car wash could have a little personality. Topped by a smiling cartoon car, it was the kind of cheerful roadside mascot that made drivers take a second look as they headed along North Watkins Street. 09-06
Located on busy U.S. 51 in the Frayser neighborhood, Jolly Wash offered both an automatic wash and self-service bays, making it a popular stop for locals looking to clean up their cars. The playful sign fit the business perfectly, reminding motorists that washing your car didn't have to be all business.
Character signs like this were once common along America's highways. Whether it was a giant chicken, a smiling donut, or in this case a happy little automobile, businesses knew a friendly face was often more memorable than a plain company logo.
UPDATE: The original Jolly Wash has since closed after years of decline, and the familiar roadside sign is gone as well. Like so many independent car washes, it eventually gave way to changing times, but its colorful mascot remains a fun reminder of when roadside advertising wasn't afraid to make you smile. 08-26
