A little tropical flavor comes with the name at the Trade Winds Motel on Mission Bay Drive in San Diego. Quite a few roadside lodgings have used that name over the years. Maybe the thought of an island breeze helps after a long day behind the wheel.
Near Mission Bay and SeaWorld, this motel sports a familiar vintage neon marquee. Check out the sign before pulling in. It gives the place some old roadside character, even for passing motorists who aren't looking for a room.
The family's account dates construction to 1951, with the lodging business formally established in 1961. The property has remained in family hands, continuing the smaller, independent motel tradition along this busy San Diego corridor.

The marquee has drawn photographers and artists over the years, giving it an audience beyond overnight guests. A room might be the reason to stop, but the old sign offers something to take home without checking in.
UPDATE: The Trade Winds Motel remains open and family-operated. Its vintage neon marquee survives, keeping a familiar roadside welcome along Mission Bay Drive. 10-26
