Coffee Shops Arizona

Route 66Here's the Pancake House Restaurant, another of Route 66's treasures. The Pancake House is located on the eastern end of Arizona. This restaurant bears a striking resemblance to the Van de Kamp's restaurant of yesteryear.

UPDATE 11/20 : Unfortunately Fort Courage in Houck has suffered with massive deterioration including a fire. The Pancake House Restaurant is also rather beaten down though still standing. More photos taken at different times over the past 20 years and a future spotlight on this location will be coming soon.

Space Age Lodge
Gila Bend, AZ

Yes, we know this section is for coffee shop classics. But, there's somewhat of a coffee shop at the Space Age Lodge at Gila Bend, AZ. The Space Age Lodge opened for business back in 1963. The motel was originally named Stovall's Space Age Lodge named after the futuristic owner Al Stovall. Stovall was also known for his other lodges in the googie area of Anaheim, CA, including the Inn of Tomorrow, Apollo Inn, and Galaxy Motel. The Space Age Motel was remodeled in the 1980's.

The Space Age Lodge was fortunately rebuilt after a fire destroyed the restaurant area in late 1998. Don't know what those outer space aliens would have done if it hadn't been rebuilt. Check out the Space Age Lodge website for more information.

UPDATE 11/20 : See more photos and information at Roadside Peek's Spotlight on the Best Western Space Age Lodge.

Darby's Restaurant (Demolished)
Mesa, AZ

To the left are a couple of shots of the marquee that used to grace Darby's Restaurant in Mesa, AZ. These shots were taken on the same fateful day in May of 2000 that the City of Mesa AZ destroyed this great old restaurant. While these shots were being taken, the demolition crew was demolishing the back of the restaurant. The motel part that had been a part of the same business had been already flattened by this time.

Check out the pylons and the flagcrete walls, not to mention the atomic orbs atop the marquee. Once upon a time, this marquee used to spin.

(Below) Darby's Restaurant was located on the corner of Center St and Main St in Mesa, Arizona and was quite a sight. It was hard to miss this mid-century building as you drove past this intersection.

Check out this photo of Bubba's Restaurant, located off of the main highway in Yuma, AZ. Bubba's looks like it was in a former Denny's restaurant.

Today the business is now called Bubba's Southern Barbeque.

To the right is a close up look a the old Bubba's restaurant sign with the sputnik looking bulb on top.

The old look coffee shops were very popular several decades ago. Bubba's is a survivor of a rapidly diminishing species.
