Built in 1961, the Landmark Hotel finally opened for business in 1969. Featuring an observation tower with a 360 degree view, the Landmark faced mixed reviews until it closed in 1990. The Landmark was imploded in 1995 and is now an empty lot. 11-05

The Silverbird Casino off the Strip opened in 1948 under its former name, the Thunderbird. The name changed to the Silverbird in 1976 and operated for 5 years under that name. In 1982, the casino opened as the El Rancho. The El Rancho was eventually imploded on October 3, 2000. 11-05

Here's the neon of the 4 Queens front facade as it glowed prior to the installation of the Fremont Street Experience canopy. This casino has been around since 1966. 11-05

Here's a shot of Fremont Street, as taken in 1978. Seen in this photo is the old Plaza signage at the end and the Mint Casino and its distinctive marquee. Of course, this was also many years before the street was closed off and canopied for the Fremont Street Experience in 1997. Ah, Vintage Vegas.

Below are other photos from 1978, including a nice shot of Vegas Vic and the Pioneer Club, back when the Pioneer was really a working casino. In the other shot below, the Golden Nugget illuminates the street. 11-05

Check out this shot of Glitter Gulch lit up and Sassy Sally blushing in full neon. This shot taken in 1990 shows how the neon stood out before the canopy was installed on Fremont Street. 11-05

Here's another shot of Fremont Street, Vegas Vic, and Glitter Gulch back in 1990. This shot shows downtown Las Vegas decked out as a neon wonderland. 11-05

Here's a close-up look at Vegas Vic, thumbing the way to the Pioneer Club Casino. Just one look at Vic in full neon makes one remember the flickering cigarette, moving arm, and the "Welcome to Downtown Las Vegas" phrase. Vegas Vic joined the Pioneer Club back in 1951. 11-05

The Fremont Hotel was built in 1951 and has been a downtown Las Vegas legend ever since. Here's a shot from 1990 that shows the neon from ground up. 11-05

Here are a few shots of the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas. These photos were taken in the late 1970's, back when the Golden Nugget still had their prominent neon marquee drawing crowds in. 11-05
