The giant bowling pin on the marquee left little doubt about what waited just ahead. Standing beside the pink building, the sign was one of those cheerful roadside landmarks that practically invited motorists to pull in for a game. Twedt's Laneswas the kind of neighborhood bowling alley that seemed to have a league going almost every night and families filling the lanes on weekends.
The bowling center opened in 1967 and spent the next 46 years serving Largo bowlers. Along with the lanes, there was the popular Cue Ball Lounge, where plenty of games were replayed and stories swapped long after the final frame. As the years went by, the alley was updated without losing its personality. When synthetic lanes replaced the originals, the old hardwood found a new purpose as custom tables inside the building.
For many locals, the marquee became just as familiar as the bowling alley itself. The oversized pin and colorful sign made it an easy landmark along Seminole Boulevard, whether you were headed there to bowl or simply passing by.
After 46 years bringing fun and entertainment to Largo and the neighboring communities, Twedt's Bowling Alley has called it a day and will close this Labor Day Weekend 2013. General Manager Tod Janssen say the business decision to close is based on the reality that there are many more activities to do these days. 09-13

UPDATE: Twedt's Lanes is indeed now a strip mall. There is a business called Smoothie King that now resides at 13100 Seminole Blvd in Largo. 10-17
UPDATE: Twedt's Lanes closed after Labor Day in 2013. The building and its landmark roadside sign were later removed to make way for new retail development. 07-26
