Foods of the Orient California Desert

Chop Suey
Blythe, CA

Out near the eastern edge of California, check out this old Chop Suey sign in Blythe. The neon lettering once let highway travelers know that Chinese food was waiting somewhere nearby. Nothing subtle here. Just two big words that could be read while rolling through town.

The name of the restaurant behind the sign has been lost. Many mid-century Chinese-American cafes advertised dishes such as chop suey more prominently than the actual business name, especially along busy routes like Hobsonway. Perhaps a smaller sign or window lettering once supplied the missing details.

UPDATE: It is not known which business this sign belonged to, so its present status is not known. 09-26
