Carousel Motel (Demolished)
Wildwood Crest, NJ

The marquee at the Carousel Motel looks like it borrowed its neon horse from a carousel at the park or the mall. Add the big sweeping script and there was no mistaking this Wildwood Crest motel from the road.

Built in 1956, the Carousel wrapped 64 rooms around a circular layout and included a rooftop sundeck. During the days when entertainers packed the nearby Bolero nightclub, Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Darin, Liberace, Connie Francis and Chubby Checker were reportedly among the celebrities who stayed in Suite 1.

UPDATE: The Carousel closed in the fall of 2004 and was demolished. The neon horse sign was taken down, but what happened to it afterward is unknown. Carousel by the Sea condominiums opened on the site in 2006. 08-26
