Crown Motel (Demolished)
Portland, OR

The Crown Motel off Industrial in Portland still features an intact mid-century sign. It's also quite fun to get yelled at while standing outside. Before the mass rail went in, the area seemed really dangerous and seedy. In fact, I was concerned when I was approached by a bicyclist while taking photos with a then seemingly expensive digicam and SLR. Roadsidepeek.com.

This 1959 motel is located at 5226 North Interstate Ave.

UPDATE 04/17 : The Crown Motel was demolished in April 2008. The sign was saved and was to have been restored. Another of the old Interstate Avenue seedy motels is now just a memory. 04-17

Here's an old sign outside of the Sahara Motel in Jordan Valley, OR. Even with the classic roadside sign, the motel still features modern amenities such as satellite TV. The town of Jordan Valley has a population of less than 300. The Sahara is located at 609 Main St.

Here's a rather interesting marquee sign that looks like one of the old Hardee's building shapes. The Casa Loma Motel appears to have good rates and is located in Roseburg.

Medford, OR

Here's an old roadside sign for the Valley Motel. This Medford, Oregon location features the typical roadside motel sign that was typical back in the mid-century. The neon lettering on this sign also appears to be in good working order.

Green Lake Motel (Gone)
Seattle, WA

Off Aurora in Seattle is the Green Lake Motel and its very tall and narrow marquee. Looks like the neon still lights up on this sign. The red arrow points the way into the entrance.

UPDATE 07/08 : The Green Lake Motel was closed in May 2008 by the health department and all tenants were evicted. Not sure of what the current status of the motel is. 07-08

UPDATE 01/09 : Here's a close-up look at the Green Lake Motel sign. The motel sign located off the main drag in Seattle was still standing as of Fall 2008. Many thanks to Matthias Tippner for update. 01-09

UPDATE 04/17 : The Green Lake Motel is history. as the motel shut its doors in 2008 and removed the sign a few years later. The motel is now called the Oak Tree Motel and features a green sign as it did before. Unfortunately, the sign is rather plain looking and short. Another Aurora Ave. neon sign is now relegated to being just a memory. 04-17
