The Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake, CA is one of the best examples of the chain remaining to this day. This Big Boy still features car hop service and the classic Big Boy Combo. Goody's Restaurant (Closed)

Check out Goody's Restaurant. This sign has been repainted a few times and is now a bright orange. Here's a shot of this sign at night.

 

UPDATE 09/10 : Goody's closed down the San Gabriel location in January 2010 and has since moved to El Monte. 09-10

 

Stan Kite's Restaurant (Closed)

The Stan Kite Restaurant and barbeque is an old coffee shop that's met up with recent neglect. The marquee itself is something to marvel at but the location is sad and nostalgic.

This coffee shop has been closed for quite a few years.

Mel's Drive-in (formerly Ben Franks)

Off Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood is a former coffee shop now converted into a Mel's Drive-in. This Mel's location was once a Ben Frank's, which was a famous location that closed down in the mid-1990's. Fortunately, Mel's has maintained the googie structure has been a 24 hour hot spot on its own.

Bob's Big Boy (Gone)

(Far right ) Here's a Bob's statue that used to sit in the Montclair mall. Unfortunately, this restaurant closed down a few years ago and Bob went with it.

 

Covered Wagon (formerly Van de Kamp's) (Demolished)
Anaheim, CA

The former Covered Wagon restaurant in Anaheim still exhibited the Van de Kamp's look, minus windmill. This place has been demolished like much of Anaheim's roadside treasures of the mid-century.

 

UPDATE 12/10 : There is a newish restaurant building now on site at t his location which is open for lease. The old Van de Kamp's building is gone. 12-10

 

M&M Soul Food
